A sweet 6 year old girl named Averie Lazzara has been battling cancer for most of her young life. She charms everyone she meets including the doctors and nurses who have cared for her during her illness.
She was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when she was 2 years old. She always had a sunny disposition and became very close with her nurse Jamie Rogers at Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois.
Over time they became very close and Jamie even got small scrubs for Averie to wear because she made it clear that she wants to be a nurse just like her, when she grows up.
The wonderful news is that Averie is now in remission and only has to visit the hospital every 2 months for follow-up treatment. Recently, her mom shared a paper that Averie had made in school with Nurse Jamie. When asked what she wants to be when she’s older, Averie wrote, “mommy and Nurse Jamie.”
Nurse Jamie says it is the best compliment she has ever been given.
