A couple, Paul Mattingly and Laura Lee Estes were married in 1980, just a year after they met and fell in love while in college. The couple say they were too young at the time and were not equipped to cope with the stresses of being married.
Even though they considered each other to be best friends their marriage only lasted 4 years. Paul remarried and had a daughter. He ended up getting divorced after that marriage too. Laura never remarried and worked as a teacher and later a therapist.
They vowed to remain friends after their marriage and kept in touch for 10 years but then fell out of touch. Then in 2019 , about 40 years later Laura was driving to Georgia to see family and she thought of Paul who lived in Alabama. She decided to call him out of the blue and they met up in Birmingham for dinner.
They both admitted when they saw each other that sparks began to fly again. They both felt it too! They chatted by phone every Saturday night for weeks and once the pandemic began, Paul moved into Laura’s home in Texas. He never left and it February of last year they said “I do” for the second time.
They regret being apart for so long , but feel blessed to get a second chance at love!
