For the past two and a half years Brooke Johns has been an ER nurse at the Southern Hills Hospital in Las Vegas. Everyday she sees patients that can’t take care of themselves the way they use to be able to and it always breaks her heart.
Five months ago she had a friend who was in the hospital and was battling a sickness, Johns helped her with her hair and it made her friend feel a little bit better knowing her hair was beautiful. That’s when she got the idea that on her days off she would go into work and help out patients who wanted their hair done so they could feel better too.
She says her acts of kindness aren’t about vanity and she believes that the human connection can help heal. “There’s something therapeutic about the human touch, it’s that connection we’re all hard-wired for.
Other nurses have also decided to join Johns and are also braiding their patients hair. She says that nurses get into nursing to help others. She also says she wants to do more and when visitation restrictions are lifted she want’s to visit a local children’s hospital and dress up for the children dressed as Elsa from “Frozen.”
