Pandemic Leads to Unlikely Friendship Between Toddler and 99-year-old Neighbor

A two year old boy from Minnesota named Benjamin Olson has a new best friend.  It’s his next door neighbor, her name is Mary O’Neill and the surprising thing is she is 99 years old!

For more that a year during the pandemic Benjamin did not see other children his age.  He stayed home with his family and his next door neighbor Mary would come out into the yard from time to time.  They ended a forming a strong friendship during this time.

Mary, who had lost her husband 37 years ago , started by waving at Benjamin through the window.  When she started coming outside they started playing a game called “cane ball.”  Benjamin would throw his ball into her yard and she would use her cane to send it back to him.  Soon they would meet up and sit on the porch and they would blow bubbles together.

Mary says seeing Benjamin makes her feel good!
