Firefighters Help Save the Life of Veteran’s Service Dog

Disabled veteran Keith Gilbert of Seattle was loading his dogs into his vehicle near a busy intersection when things went terribly wrong.

His service dog — a full-sized German Shepherd named Mouse — slipped out and ran across the street. Keith is disabled and couldn’t chase Mouse. And, sure enough, Mouse was struck by a car. Bad luck all around.

But their luck was about to change in a big way.

A couple — Natalie Luke and David Crump — were driving by when they saw Mouse get hit. They pulled over and created a makeshift backboard out of a car windshield shade. They also used their first aid kit to treat an open wound on Mouse’s leg.

Soon after that, firefighters Aidan Casey and Bobby Foster were passing through and were able to give Mouse even more emergency treatment — and get her to an emergency veterinarian.

Thanks to fast-acting strangers and firefighters, Mouse is on her way to a full recovery — and is expected to continue to stand by the side of Keith for many years to come.
