American or bald eagles are our national symbol and are only known to exist in North America.  They can not only see with their eyes closed they can also see ultra violet light.  Hence the term “Eagle eyed.”  Today is National American Eagle Day!

Young American Eagles or bald eagles are not bald.

The males are much larger than the females.

American Eagles live relatively short lives for being such a large bird.  The lifespan is on average 10 years.

They have the largest nests of any bird.

Fact – Though no eagles are truly bald, young American eagles are covered in brown feathers.

Fake – the female bald eagle is much bigger than the male. Females take the lead in arranging the nesting material, so being bigger might help them take charge. Also, they spend longer incubating the eggs than males, so their size could intimidate would-be egg thieves.

Fake – They live very long lives, some have lived to be almost 40 years old.

Fact – They are 5 feet wide and 2 feet deep.
