Y.E.S. Dance for a Chance Fundraiser

On a single night in April, a team of street outreach workers counted more than 400 youth living on the streets in Omaha and Council Bluffs. Many of these youth have been physically, emotionally and/or sexually abused, making it unsafe for them to return home. Many others are facing poor health, mental issues and substance abuse problems. Adolescence is a crucial phase of psychological and social development. Without proper support and direction, these battered, struggling youth cannot succeed independently.
Youth Emergency Services (YES) has been providing services to homeless youth for more than 35 years. YES operates four major programs, including a street outreach program, emergency shelter, maternity group home and a transitional living program. In 2009-10, YES helped nearly 800 youth find food, shelter and other necessary support.
On Saturday, Aug. 27, YES will host its third annual Dance for a Chance fundraiser. Ten local celebrities will take the floor with professional dance instructors in a competition similar to the show Dancing with the Stars. Funds raised through ticket purchases, sponsorships and a silent auction/raffle benefit YES’ mission to serve and empower homeless and at-risk youth. Last year’s event raised more than $23,000. YES hopes to raise $40,000 this year.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at Skutt Catholic High School, 3131 S 156 St. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served. This year’s event is a red carpet theme, including complimentary valet parking.
Tickets are $50 and are available for purchase online at
