Free oral head and neck cancer screening

  • Print

April is Oral Head and Neck Cancer Awareness month. In order to be a good neighbor, we are offering the opportunity for free oral head and neck cancer screening. The screening will be provided on:
Monday, May 9, 2011
          2pm to 5pm
          Specialty Dental Care
          12242 K Plaza, Suite 113
We do recommend you schedule a time with us on that day but will also accommodate walk-in patients for the screening. If you want to schedule the screening for you and/or a friend or family member, please call the office at (402) 334-8083. This free screening is for oral and head and neck cancer purposes only so no dental exam will be done nor any dental diagnosis made.
Head and neck cancer is very treatable if detected early. However, it is often not detected until it has progressed to a more advanced stage. Treatment can include simple excision to surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Common Signs and Symptoms:
A lump in the neck - cancers of the head and neck usually spread to the lymph nodes in the neck. A lump that last more than two weeks should be evaluated by an ENT as soon as possible.
Change in the voice - most cancers in the larynx cause some changes in the voice. Any hoarseness or vocal changes lasting for more than two weeks should be evaluated.
A growth in the mouth - Most cancers of the mouth and tongue cause a sore or swelling that doesn't go away.
Swallowing problems - Cancer of the throat or esophagus may make swallowing solid foods and even liquids difficult.
Changes in skin coloration and texture - The most common head and neck cancer is skin cancer.
Persistent earache - Constant pain in or around the ear when you swallow can be a sign of infection or tumor growth in the throat.

It is important to note that the symptoms described here can occur with no cancer present, but having a thorough examination by an ENT physician can rule out any issues
