“This is my favorite age!”

“This is my favorite age!”

I find myself saying that every few weeks or so, “This is my favorite age!”  It has been so much fun having our 8 month old in our lives. Dan had told me when I was pregnant that there is no joy, like the joy a child brings to a home. He was right.

This was all new to me, the baby thing. I’m the youngest of two in my immediate family and am the youngest of my cousins. Unlike most teens, I never babysat and only held a couple babies here and there. The first time I ever changed a diaper was in 2008.  Needless to say, I had a lot to learn and no idea what to expect. And, by the time Dan’s kids came into my life they were 12, 13 and 15... old enough to do chores and their own laundry.

So when Jackson came into the world, it was all new.  Within the first week I became a pro at changing a diaper, however mastering the art of avoiding his aim took a few months. I quickly learned his cries and became very comfortable with him. Pretty soon, around 6 weeks, he was staring to smile. It brought me to tears the first time it happened when I put him back to bed in the middle of the night. By 12 weeks he was full on laughing, which was the sweetest sound I had ever heard. It’s been fun to experience all of the new things he does, because I had no expectation or idea they were coming.

It seems like each day he’s growing and changing and showing more personality and I find myself saying, “This is my favorite age.” Most recently he’s been riding shot gun in our grocery cart, riding in the stroller and sitting up like a champ. I’m excited to see what the next weeks and months and years hold and am looking forward to all his firsts. I can’t wait to find out what will have me saying, “This is my favorite age” next!  Although baby proofing seems like a daunting task… maybe that’s why we keep putting it off?
