100 City Crews Hit Omaha's Streets to Remove Storm Debris

Omaha, NE - City crews are working their way through Omaha to help neighborhoods that are drowning in storm debris. A spokesman for Mayor Mike Fahey says 100 public works trucks hit the streets . They are picking up debris along the curbs in the hardest hit neighborhoods.

Omaha is also hiring private companies to help move the clean-up process along. The citywide recovery effort is expected to last for several weeks. Here is a list of the neighborhoods the crews are focusing on first:

North 52nd Street - Turner Blvd., Capitol - Leavenworth
Turner Blvd. - I-480, Farnam - Leavenworth
South 84th Street - 66th Street, Pacific - Center
South 51st Street - 42nd Street, Center - Spring
South 42nd Street - 32nd Avenue, Center - Gold
South 52nd Street - 38th Street, L - Y
66th Street - 52nd Street, Binney to Western
105th Street - 96th Street, Dodge - Pacific
120th Street - 111th Street, Pacific - Center
102nd Street - along the Papio Creek, Pacific - Center
96th Street - 84th Street, Center - I-80
200th Street - 204th Street, Blondo - Veterans Drive
The city is asking storm victims to follow some rules to help make debris collection faster and easier. Here is a list of guidelines to follow when setting your debris at the curb:

Tree debris can be placed along the curb for collection by city crews. The neater the material is cut and stacked, the more easily it can be collected. There is less likelihood of damage to lawns and private property if the material is properly stacked.
Tree debris will be picked up with mechanical grapples and front end loaders where possible. To help avoid damage, place piles away from trees, mailboxes, street signs, fire hydrants, and walls.
Where possible, place the material behind the curb. Crews will not take equipment on private property, including driveways, to collect tree debris.
Avoid placing material in the street.
Avoid piling material along heavily traveled streets if that is an option. Do not place material near intersections.
Only tree debris will be collected. No trash, lumber, fence materials, etc. should be included. Non tree debris can be hauled to the County landfill or placed in trash containers if it meets criteria for curb-side trash pickup.
Deffenbaugh customers can also leave small debris along the curb. The branches must be less than four feet long and two inches wide.

If you don't want to wait for the city to remove your debris, you can take it to several sites around the metro area:
